Malcolm Arnold is bij het grote publiek beter bekend als de componist van de filmmuziek bij ‘The Bridge over the River Kwai’ – waar hij de marcherende soldaten al fluitend liet voorbij lopen op de tonen van Kenneth Alford’s ‘Colonel Bogey’. Malcolm Arnold was zelf trompettist en componeerde heelwat suites voor brassband. De volgende ‘Anniversary Overture’ componeerde hij oorspronkelijk voor symfonisch orkest naar aanleiding van de 21ste verjaardag van de ‘Hong Kong Philharmonic Society’. Met enkele oosters-aandoende thema’s in het middendeel geeft Arnold een gepaste knipoog naar de Japanse opdrachtgever. Luc Vertommen arrangeerde het werk voor brassband. Anniversary Overture, opus 99 was written for the 21st anniversary of the founding of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Society. The first performance was given by the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Arrigo Foa, at the City Hall, Hong Kong, on 8th December 1968. Writing for an orchestra of uncertain quality, Arnold produced a short and straightforward work in a now familiar format that makes few demands on players or listeners. A bold and bracing first theme rising by fourths from C through F and B flat to E flat, its main rhythmic figure is fanfarised by the brass, a more song-like second theme in E flat built up from four similar four-bar phrases, falling sequentially. Both themes are repeated in varied forms, the first being briefly treated in augmentation, the Overture ending with a recapitulation of both themes in the home key of F.
